Northern Tanzania brings several of the country's best-known wildlife landscapes into one connected safari region. Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara can be combined in different ways depending on trip length, season and the pace you want.
Serengeti and the Great Migration
The Serengeti is the anchor of many northern Tanzania safaris, but the strongest itinerary gives it enough time rather than treating it as a quick stop. Seasonal wildlife movement can influence which part of the ecosystem deserves more attention, while central Serengeti remains useful in many itineraries because of its year-round wildlife viewing and connections to other areas.
Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara
Ngorongoro adds a compact crater wildlife experience and highland scenery. Tarangire is known for a different landscape and strong dry-season wildlife concentrations, while Lake Manyara can fit shorter routes or journeys that benefit from another Rift Valley ecosystem. The right combination depends on how many days you have and how much driving you want between stops.
How many days should you plan?
Short northern safaris can focus on two or three areas, while longer trips allow more time in Serengeti and a more relaxed route. Rather than counting parks, compare where each night is spent, how long transfers take and whether the itinerary gives enough time for game drives.
Combine safari with trekking or Zanzibar
Northern Tanzania is practical for travellers connecting a safari with Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru or a Zanzibar extension. The sequence should be planned around flight times, recovery days and the actual safari route rather than adding destinations simply to make the itinerary longer.
