Choose the season around what you want to experience
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but conditions change significantly by month and region. The drier periods are popular because wildlife often concentrates around permanent water sources and roads are generally easier to navigate. The greener months bring dramatic landscapes, newborn animals in some ecosystems, fewer visitors in certain areas and excellent photographic colour.
Dry-season travel
Much of June through October is typically drier across northern Tanzania. This period is popular for Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti travel, and it overlaps with important phases of wildebeest movement. Demand can be high, so lodge choice and routing benefit from early planning.
Green-season travel
November through May includes short-rain and long-rain periods, with considerable variation from year to year. Many travellers value the greener scenery, birdlife and lower visitor density. The southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem are especially important during the early-year calving period, although wildlife movement always responds to actual rainfall and grazing conditions.
There is no single perfect month
A honeymoon couple prioritizing weather and lodge atmosphere may choose differently from a migration photographer or a family tied to school holidays. Discuss your priority first, then select the parks and accommodation around that window.
