The migration is a cycle, not a single event
Large herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in response to rainfall, fresh grazing and water. Popular marketing often reduces this complex movement to river crossings, but the migration offers different experiences throughout the year.
Southern plains and calving
Early in the year, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem can hold major concentrations of animals when grass and water conditions are suitable. Calving attracts predators and creates intense wildlife viewing.
Movement west and north
As conditions dry, herds move through central and western areas before many continue toward northern Serengeti and the wider Mara ecosystem. River crossings may occur during this broader movement, but timing, location and whether a crossing happens while you are present cannot be guaranteed.
Build flexibility into the itinerary
Use current seasonal information, select accommodation in the most relevant sector and allow multiple game-drive opportunities. A migration safari should still work as a strong wildlife trip even if the herds behave differently from forecasts.
