How to compare Kilimanjaro routes
There is no single best Kilimanjaro route for every traveller. A useful comparison looks at duration, accommodation style, approach, terrain, pacing and the time available for acclimatization. AfroEast Adventures currently has client-confirmed 2026 packages for Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai and Umbwe.
Machame: 7 or 8 days
Machame is a camping route and is available in 7-day and 8-day programs. Travellers often compare these versions by the amount of time they can commit to the mountain and the pacing they prefer.
Lemosho: 7 or 8 days
Lemosho approaches from the west and is also offered over 7 or 8 days. It suits travellers looking for a longer western approach and camping-based trek.
Marangu: 5 or 6 days
Marangu is distinct because accommodation on the mountain is in huts. AfroEast has confirmed 5-day and 6-day versions, allowing travellers to compare a shorter schedule with an option that adds more time.
Rongai: 7 days
Rongai approaches Kilimanjaro from the north. The current confirmed program is 7 days and provides another route choice for travellers comparing mountain approaches.
Umbwe: 7 days
Umbwe is a steeper approach and should be chosen with realistic expectations about the physical and altitude demands of the climb. The current confirmed program is 7 days.
Route length and acclimatization
More days can provide additional time at intermediate elevations, but no itinerary removes altitude risk. Climbers should follow guide pacing, communicate symptoms and avoid selecting a route only because it is the shortest or cheapest.
