Safari overview
About this journey
A different side of Tanzania: the Garden of God
Trade the busy safari roads for the open highland landscapes of Kitulo National Park. This three-day nature journey begins and ends in Mbeya and focuses on guided walking, fresh mountain air, birdlife and the remarkable plants of Tanzania’s Southern Highlands. Kitulo is known for its botanical diversity and seasonal wildflower displays, not for Big Five game drives.
The pace is intentionally unhurried. You will have time to notice the smaller details: flowering plants, grassland textures, changing cloud patterns and expansive plateau views. Flowering conditions vary with the season and rainfall, so no particular bloom is guaranteed.
Tour highlights

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Mbeya to the Kitulo area — Welcome to the highlands
Meet your guide in Mbeya and travel towards the Kitulo plateau. The journey introduces the cooler climate and rolling terrain of the Southern Highlands. Depending on arrival time, road conditions and park arrangements, enjoy an introductory walk or scenic stop. Settle into your prearranged accommodation for the night.
Day 2: Kitulo National Park — Guided hiking and nature discovery
Spend the day exploring suitable walking areas with an authorized local guide, following current park rules and conditions. Look for seasonal flowering plants, birds and sweeping plateau views. Your guide can adapt the walking distance to the group’s fitness, weather and trail access. Take breaks for photography and a packed lunch where permitted, then return to your accommodation.
Day 3: Morning scenery and return to Mbeya
Enjoy a relaxed morning in the highlands, with a short nature activity if time and conditions allow. Afterwards, travel back to Mbeya for your onward arrangements. Exact arrival time depends on the departure point, road conditions and chosen stops.
Who this trip suits
This tour is ideal for hikers, botanists, photographers, birdwatchers and travelers who enjoy quiet landscapes. It is not designed as a classic wildlife safari with vehicle-based predator sightings. Walking routes can be adjusted, but the high elevation and variable weather should be considered.
When to visit
Wildflower displays are generally associated with the wetter months, while drier periods can offer different walking conditions and clear landscape views. Weather and bloom timing are variable. Ask AfroEast Adventures for current seasonal advice before choosing dates.
Planning notes
Bring sturdy walking shoes, warm layers, waterproof protection, sun protection and a refillable water bottle. Accommodation, meals, park fees and transport arrangements must be confirmed in the final quotation. Park activities are subject to current regulations, access and weather.
