Follow the migration by season, not by a single permanent location
The Great Migration is a year-round movement through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, so the strongest itinerary depends on when you travel. No responsible operator can guarantee a river crossing or a specific herd position on a particular day. What good planning can do is place you in the most relevant region for the season and build enough time into the safari to respond to current wildlife conditions.
Early-year itineraries often focus on the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem, while later dry-season journeys may shift toward western or northern sectors. Central Serengeti remains valuable across much of the year because of resident wildlife and its position within the wider ecosystem.
Build a migration safari with enough time
A rushed one-night stop in the Serengeti is rarely the best way to plan a migration-focused journey. Consider multiple game-drive days, sensible lodge locations and the driving or flight logistics between regions. Combining Tarangire and Ngorongoro with Serengeti can create a broader Tanzania safari while keeping the migration as the main wildlife objective.
