The 5 Days Southern Tanzania Wilderness Safari Experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the untouched and less crowded parks of southern Tanzania. Unlike the popular northern circuit, this adventure takes you deep into remote wilderness areas such as Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Mikumi National Park, where wildlife roams freely in vast landscapes. Expect close encounters with elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, and a wide variety of bird species. This safari combines classic game drives with optional boat safaris and walking safaris, providing a more intimate and authentic African experience. Ideal for travelers seeking a quieter, off-the-beaten-path adventure with incredible biodiversity.
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Nyerere National Park
Your journey begins with a morning departure from Dar es Salaam or a flight into the Selous/Nyerere airstrip. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your lodge located in the heart of the wilderness. After check-in and a short rest, enjoy your first introduction to the African bush with an evening boat safari along the Rufiji River. This unique experience allows you to observe hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of birdlife in a peaceful setting while enjoying the sunset over the water. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 2: Full Day Game Drive in Nyerere National Park
After an early breakfast, embark on a full-day game drive exploring the vast plains, river systems, and woodlands of Nyerere National Park. This park is home to large populations of elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, and rare African wild dogs. With fewer vehicles compared to northern parks, you will enjoy a more exclusive safari experience. A picnic lunch will be served in a scenic location within the park. Continue your game drive in the afternoon before returning to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Walking Safari & Transfer to Mikumi National Park
Start your day with a guided walking safari led by an armed ranger, offering a thrilling opportunity to explore the bush on foot and learn about animal tracks, plants, and ecosystems. After breakfast, depart for Mikumi National Park with scenic views of rural Tanzania along the way. Upon arrival, enjoy a short evening game drive before heading to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Full Day Game Drive in Mikumi National Park
Spend the day exploring Mikumi National Park, often compared to the Serengeti due to its open plains and abundant wildlife. You will have excellent opportunities to see lions, zebras, wildebeests, elephants, and a wide variety of bird species. The Mkata Floodplain is particularly rich in wildlife and offers great photography opportunities. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and continue your game drive into the afternoon. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Return to Dar es Salaam / Departure
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning before starting your journey back to Dar es Salaam or transferring to the airstrip for your departure flight. This marks the end of your unforgettable southern Tanzania safari, filled with unique wildlife encounters and authentic wilderness experiences.
